PHUKET: Why We Love You

Yeah, living in Serbia was cool. But once we moved to Thailand, we realized this place suits us better. Sure, crazy stuff happens around here. The island itself is just madness.

The heat, like 37 degrees Celsius, makes it hard to breathe. T-shirts are always soaked. The air smells like smoke and chili pepper. Yeah, it’s like an Asian circus or theater. Crowded markets. Interesting (read: strange) people. And here we are, a simple family with kids, used to cooler and more comfortable climates.

But you know what?

We actually love the exaggerated things. Exaggerated people. Exaggerated places. Maybe we’re maximalists?

We love stepping out the door and immediately finding adventures. A frog that blows up like a balloon. Rain pouring down like a wall, perfect for showering under. Unusual food prepared like it’s a circus act. Little dogs in strollers and on bikes.

We’re just walking around, mouths agape.

Maybe living with your mouth open in amazement is cool.

So, we love Phuket. Here, we’re constantly amazed. While in Serbia, we sometimes got bored. And sometimes there was nowhere to go. Here, it can be hot, tough, exhausting, but never boring. Not a single day.

A parrot eats noodles. We love it too. A scorpion runs across the parking lot. How not to step on it? A giant cockroach scuttles around the bathroom. That’s at night. When you get up in pitch darkness. Very scary.

Very scary and fun. Very colorful — and fun. Very unusual — and fun. Phuket is fun. We have a fun life here.

And we love how Thais react to the camera. In many countries, people start covering their faces or ask not to be filmed. Asians love being in front of the lens. They start smiling as soon as they see our Go Pro. They’re very friendly and open. They have no complexes, and that’s really cool.

So, if you were to ask us now — Serbia or Thailand? We’d scratch our heads thoughtfully. And we’d answer like this: Thailand — now. Serbia — in our golden years. There, we’d have a country house, grow grapes, and barbecue meat on charcoal. But for now…

For now, we want to be amazed.

And we do it.
